What happened?
We recently learned that Evolve Bank & Trust, a former partner bank of Relay, was impacted by a data breach.
Our Security Team is actively investigating and is in close contact with our former partner bank. This breach at Evolve may have included select Relay users who registered with us before January 1, 2023, when we were partnered with Evolve. For these individuals, the affected data may include name, Social Security Number (SSN), Employer Identification Number (EIN), date of birth, bank account numbers (only for closed bank account(s) no longer in use), contact information, and/or other personal information. All current Relay users who may be impacted by the breach at Evolve have been directly notified via email.
Evolve is working with authorities to manage the situation. They have shared on their incident status page that they will directly notify each individual whose personal information was affected to offer them two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection. For the latest from Evolve, or to get in touch with their team for more information, please visit their incident status page.
We recognize the importance of trust between a business and its banking service and appreciate you choosing to bank with us. Maintaining a secure and compliant banking environment for our users is a top priority. Our Security Team works hard to protect your data and your money in Relay. Visit our Trust Center to understand how.
Is my Relay account still safe?
Yes. Relay is safe. We can confirm that this data breach has not impacted our own systems. This means:
- Your Relay login credentials, including your password, are safe to use. You can access your account as normal.
- You can continue to use your account(s) in Relay as normal.
- You can continue to use any of your Relay cards as they were not impacted. Your card number(s) and PIN(s) are safe.
What should I do?
If you receive any suspicious calls, texts or emails asking about sensitive information, please be extra cautious. We have tips here for how you can recognize and respond to these kinds of attempts, which is known as phishing.
There are other best practices for data and identity protection that you can follow:
- Place a free fraud alert on your credit file with any one of the credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion.
- Visit the Federal Trade Commission website to understand more about preventing identity theft or reporting suspected identity theft.
- You can reach out to your State Attorney General and/or local police department to file and obtain a police report.
To understand more about how Relay uses and shares data, you can review our Privacy Policy.
Why did Relay work with Evolve? Why do you use a banking partner?
We no longer work or partner with Evolve. As our former banking partner, Evolve provided core banking services and FDIC insurance to Relay customers. They were required by law to collect and store identifying information on our users, which is why it was shared with them.
Relay is not a bank. We partner with banks to provide core banking services — like checking and savings accounts, debit and credit cards, vendor payments, and more — and FDIC insurance to our customers.
Is my data affected? How does Relay keep my data safe and secure?
All current Relay users impacted by the breach at Evolve will be notified by Wednesday, July 3.
At Relay, maintaining a secure and compliant banking environment for our users is a top priority. As a platform, we are SOC 2 compliant, and our Security Team works hard to implement strict protocols that safeguard the data of our users. For more information, visit our Trust Center.
Is Relay currently safe to use? Can I still use my accounts and cards?
Yes. Relay is safe. This data breach has not impacted our systems, which means:
- Your Relay login credentials, including your password, are safe to use. You can access your account as normal.
- You can continue to use your account(s) in Relay as normal.
- You can continue to use any Relay cards you may have, as they were not impacted. Your card number(s) and PIN(s) are safe.
Can you provide more details on how Evolve is handling this? What happens now?
Evolve has said they will directly notify each individual whose personal information was affected to offer two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection plus a phone number for a dedicated call center. If your data was affected, you will hear directly from Evolve as early as Monday, July 8.
