This feature is currently in beta to a small group of customers. The beta program is invite-only.
This article will walk through how to send payment requests to your clients, and securely collect payments via ACH or domestic wire transfer.
Please note: this feature is not currently available within the Relay mobile app. We expect that you’ll be able to create and send payment request from our app by mid-November.
Setting up payment requests for your account
A quick setup is required before you can create and send your first payment request. Here are the steps:
- Sign in to your Relay account on your desktop.
- Navigate to the Payments tab on the left-hand side of your screen, then click Requests.
- Click Get Started.
- Select the checking account into which you would like payments to be deposited.
- Click Finish setup. You’ll be taken to the payment request request dashboard—this is where you’ll create and track payment requests!
Sending a payment request
Only team members with Administrator or Manager permissions, or advisors with Super Administrator permissions, can send payment request on Relay. Here's how:
- Sign in to your Relay account on your desktop.
- Navigate to the Payments tab on the left-hand side of your screen, then click Requests.
- Click Create payment link.
- Create a new customer to request your payment from, or select an existing customer (you can also select from existing payees). New contacts will automatically be saved for future requests. Click Continue.
- Enter an amount and select a due date for the payment.
- Select how you would like your customer to receive the payment request—email is on by default; but you can also unselect it to simply generate a link without sending an email.
- Select which payment options you would like to accept. You can accept at this time payments via credit or debit cards; or send a request where your ACH and wire information is shared with your customer. Please note, all card payments will be charged a processing fee. Click Continue.
- Add a note (such as a description of what the payment is for) and any relevant attachments (such as an invoice). Click Review.
- Review the details of your request, then click Send payment link. The link will be emailed to your customer.
- The confirmation page displayed will include the link to your newly-created payment request. You can copy/paste it for your own reference, or re-send it to your customer if needed.
Accepting payments from customers
Your customers will receive a payment request that includes the payment amount, due date, and any notes or attachments you provided.
Customers can pay you by ACH transfer or domestic wire, and they’ll have to initiate the payment from their bank account.
If a customer pays you via credit or debit card; settlement of the funds (minus any fees) will be deposited into your account with 2-3 business days.
Please note: the payment request includes the account details needed to initiate a transfer; however, the account details provided are for a payment receiving account, so your account information is protected and not displayed in any payment request. Your customer can copy/paste these details to set up and initiate payment from their bank account.
Managing your payment requests
You can see all of your payment requests by navigating to Payments > Requests. This is where you can copy/paste payment request links to re-send to customers at any time or cancel them.
To cancel a payment request, click on the 3 vertical dots beside the Payment Link and click on Cancel Request.
Processing timeline and fees
Settlement times are dependent on the sending bank. Please confirm the estimated settlement times with your customer to get a better understanding of when you can expect your payment to arrive.
Relay will not charge you a fee to receive an ACH or domestic wire; however, your customer may be charged a fee by their bank when they send a payment.
Settlement times for any debit or credit card take 2-3 business days. Relay will charge a fee for all card payments processed. This is to cover card network; brands; and interchange fees charged to Relay.
