Switching to app-based two-factor authentication (2FA)

If you have SMS-based 2FA enabled on your Relay account but would prefer app-based 2FA, please contact our Customer Experience team over the phone to make the switch.

What is 2FA?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is used to add an additional layer of security to protect your financial information. It also allows you to control access of third-party apps like Plaid so they can be securely connected to Relay. All Relay accounts are protected by SMS 2FA by default.

What is an authenticator app?

An authenticator app can be downloaded on your smartphone to provide an extra layer of security to your online accounts by generating temporary one-time passwords (OTPs). These passwords are used for two-factor authentication (2FA) and help protect your accounts from unauthorized access.

What are some examples of 2FA authenticator apps?

Google Authenticator (Android, iOS), Duo Mobile (Android, iOS) and Authy (Android, iOS) are some examples of commonly used authenticator apps.

When using an authenticator app might be beneficial

It is highly recommended to switch over to app-based 2FA if you are travelling or planning to travel. Travelling may cause issues with receiving text messages on your mobile device, so utilizing an authenticator app may be more reliable so you can access your Relay account no matter where you are in the world.

You may also consider using an authenticator app if your phone service isn't always reliable, as this may cause disruptions when delivering your 2FA codes via SMS.
