Opening a Relay Account as a Non-profit Organization

Relay supports U.S.-based non-profit organizations, including 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(6) entities. This article outlines the eligibility criteria, required documentation, and important onboarding considerations for non-profits. Your organization must already be formed as a corporation or a qualifying nonprofit LLC before you begin the application.

Supported Non-profit Types

Relay currently supports the following IRS-recognized structures:

  • 501(c)(3): Charitable organizations, educational institutions, religious groups, and public foundations
  • 501(c)(6): Business leagues, chambers of commerce, and professional associations

To qualify, the organization must be registered in the U.S. and have a valid Employer Identification Number (EIN) issued by the IRS.

Required Documentation

Non-profits must provide the following documents during the onboarding process:

Document Description
IRS EIN Letter (Form SS-4 or 147C) Confirms your organization's EIN and legal name
IRS 501(c) Determination Letter Verifies your tax-exempt status
Articles of Incorporation or Bylaws Outlines your organization’s structure and governance
U.S. Business Address A physical address located within the United States
Authorized Signer Information Government-issued photo ID for each individual with financial authority on the account

Please note: All documents must be legible and match the information provided in the application.

Pick your Business Type in the Relay application

Select the option that matches how your nonprofit is legally set up in your state.

Your legal setup Choose in Relay What we’ll ask for
Non-profit corporation
(most charities, foundations, churches, trade groups)
Corporation • Articles of Incorporation
• Bylaws (if they show how you’re governed)
Non-profit LLC
(all owners are already tax-exempt or government units)
LLC • Articles of Organization
• Operating Agreement
Sole proprietorship or general partnership Not supported Please form a corporation or qualifying non-profit LLC first.

Tip: Your Relay account name and EIN must match the name on your formation documents. Picking the wrong Business Type can slow down approval.

Ownership and Administrators

Relay is required to collect information about individuals with financial control over the account, even if the organization does not have equity holders.

Non-profit organizations will reflect 0% ownership during the onboarding process. This value is fixed and cannot be adjusted.

Individuals with financial responsibility—such as the Executive Director, Treasurer, or CFO—should be added as Administrators or Authorized Users, not as owners. These individuals must complete identity verification.
