When you send an invoice in Relay with a payment request attached, your client receives a secure link that lets them view the invoice and pay it—no Relay account is required. This article walks through what your client sees, how the payment experience works, and what to expect once payment is submitted.
How invoices are delivered to your clients
Once you send an invoice as a Payment Request:
- Your client receives an email from Relay with a subject line like: "Invoice from [Your Business Name]"
-
The email includes:
- A summary of the invoice amount and due date
- Your business logo (if added)
- A secure "View and Pay Invoice" button
You can also copy and send the payment link manually if you prefer to deliver it through your own channels.
What the client sees when they open the invoice
When the client clicks the link, they are taken to a secure Relay-hosted page that shows:
- Your business name and logo
- Invoice issue date, due date, and invoice number
- A detailed list of line items, taxes, discounts, and totals
- Any memo you included on the invoice
- Downloadable attachments (if you uploaded files)
At the bottom, they’ll see the available payment methods and can proceed to pay directly from the page.
How the client pays the invoice
-
Choose a payment method The client selects from the methods you enabled when creating the invoice:
- Credit/debit card
- Pay by bank (ACH debit via Plaid)
- ACH or wire transfer (manual push)
-
Enter payment details Based on the selected method, they may:
- Enter card info
- Connect their bank securely via Plaid
- Follow instructions to initiate a manual bank transfer
- Submit the payment Once payment is submitted, they’ll see a confirmation on-screen. You’ll be notified in Relay.
Your client does not need a Relay account to complete the payment.
What happens after payment
- The invoice status updates to "Processing" once the payment is submitted
- When the payment settles, the status will change to "Paid"
- You can track everything in the Invoices tab under Get Paid
