Individual and shared cards

This article explains the difference between individual cards and shared cards within Relay. Please note that the ownership of a card cannot be changed once it's been created.

Shared cards

Shared cards are meant to be shared across multiple team members. For instance, you could create a card for a specific department (e.g., Marketing Card) or utility (e.g., Gas Card). During card creation, you can customize the card’s second line (which will be printed on the card) to specify the card’s purpose.

Please note that shared cards still need one authorized "Cardholder" assigned to them; this individual would be the authorized representative permitted to contact Visa if a transaction needs to be disputed on that card.

Individual cards

Individual cards are meant to be assigned to a specific team member. This makes it easier to track expenses and ensure accountability. It also helps maintain transparency and informed decision-making within the organization.

To assign an individual card, create a new Relay debit card and designate the desired team member as the Cardholder; if this individual is not yet a team member on your account, you will first need to invite them to join your organization on Relay.

Access and permissions

To assign a card to a team member, you will first need to invite that team member to Relay with the permission level of Cardholder, Manager, or Administrator. To learn the difference between these permission levels, please see Team member permissions.Once you've invited this team member to Relay, ensure that they accept their invite and set up their Relay account.

Please note: Administrators and Managers have full visibility and control over all cards within the organization. Cardholders can view and manage only the cards assigned to them and transactions associated with these cards. They do not have access to shared cards unless they are designated as the Cardholder.
