Team member vs. advisor: what’s the difference?
Team members are people who work inside your organization (employee, business partner, virtual assistant, etc.).
Advisors are trusted people who support your business as an external party (accountant, bookkeeper, tax advisor, etc.).
Team members and advisors have different permission options. Learn more here:
How to invite a team member or advisor
Before you start: You’ll need the person’s work email and to decide what permission level they should have.
- Sign in to your Relay account.
- Go to Team.
- Select Invite team member (or Add).
- In Work email, enter the person’s email address.
- (Optional) Enable Request user address if you plan to send them a physical Relay card.
-
(Optional) In Give team member same permissions as:
Select an existing team member from the dropdown to copy their permissions. You can still adjust the permission level and account access before sending the invite. - Select the appropriate Permission level.
- If you chose a permission level that doesn’t automatically include all accounts, choose which checking/savings accounts they can access.
- Click Invite.
- The invited person will receive an email from Relay. They must accept the invite and create a login before they can access your organization.
- Sign in to the Relay app on your mobile device.
- Navigate to the Settings tab.
- Tap Team.
- Tap the plus (+) sign button at the top-right corner of your screen.
- Select the user type (Team member or Advisor).
- Enter the team member/advisor's email address, then choose their permission level.
- If you've selected a more restrictive permission level, select the checking/savings accounts you want this team member/advisor to have access to. This option will not appear if the permission level you've selected permits access to all accounts by default.
- Tap Invite.
- The invited user will now receive an email from Relay inviting them to join your organization! They must accept their invite and create a login before they can view your organization within Relay.
Tip: If you aren’t sure what to choose, start with the most restrictive permission level that still lets them do their job—you can always expand access later.
How to resend or cancel an invite
- Sign in to your Relay account.
- Go to Team.
- Find the invited team member with a Pending invite.
- Click Resend to send the invite again.
- To cancel the invite, click the three vertical dots next to their name, then select Cancel.
- Sign in to the Relay app on your mobile device.
- Navigate to the Settings tab.
- Tap Team.
- Tap Resend under the team member/advisor's name to send a new invite, or Cancel to delete the invite altogether.
What happens if you cancel? Cancelling removes the pending invite and invalidates the link in the invite email. You can re-invite the same email address at any time.

Invite links are valid for 4 weeks. If the invite expires, go to Team and select Resend to generate a new invite email, or Cancel to remove the pending invite.

Administrators can invite team members and advisors with any permission level.
Managers can invite team members only (not advisors), and only with Cardholder, Deposit-only, or Read-only permission levels.
Advisors with Super Administrator or Administrator permissions can invite team members and other advisors with any permission level.
What is a Super Administrator?
Super Administrator is a permission level exclusive to advisors that provides additional access to manage company finances and integrations.
I invited someone—why can’t they access our Relay account yet?
They must accept the invite email and create a Relay login. Until they complete those steps, they’ll remain in Pending status on the Team page.
My invitee didn’t receive the email—what should I do?
- Confirm the work email was entered correctly.
- Ask them to check spam/junk and any company quarantine filters.
- From the Team page, open the pending invite and select Resend.
Can I cancel an invite and re-invite the same email address?
Yes. Cancelling invalidates the invite link and removes the pending invite from the Team page. You can re-invite the same email address at any time.
If I copy permissions from another team member, can I still customize access?
Yes. Give team member same permissions as copies an existing user’s setup as a starting point. You can still change the permission level and, if prompted, adjust which checking/savings accounts they can access before you send the invite.
What does “Request user address” do?
Enable Request user address if you plan to send the invitee a physical Relay card. Relay will collect their address details as part of the onboarding flow.
